Disks banned in Afghanistan (23.07.2001 - 11:10 Uhr)

From the "Comedy in Kabul" section: Even minimalists who still strictly refuse to give their Atari ST a hard drive are no longer welcome in Afghanistan: Indeed, the list of things banned in Afghanistan has grown a little longer again. After the use of the internet was recently banned, floppy disks have now landed on the index. From now on, chess and card games, lipstick, ties, fashion journals, music cassettes and instruments as well as wigs made of human hair are also considered "un-Islamic". Border guards have been instructed to confiscate such items. No Afghan is allowed to own satellite dishes any more either. At least for TV, no one would have been able to do anything with them, because television had been abolished a long time ago. Afghanistan thus has little chance of attaining a top position in the eternal hit list of nations with the highest fun factor. (tr)

Apple revises model range (18.07.2001 - 10:10 Uhr)

Power Mac G4 Apple has revamped its product line and made it faster. Apple CEO Steve Jobs unveiled new iMacs and Power Mac G4 models in his traditional keynote at the Macworld Expo in New York, which begins today. The iMac is now available with a choice of 500, 600 or 700 MHz, whereby only the smallest model does not yet have a CD-RW drive as standard. Prices range from just under DM 2500 (500 MHz G3, CD-ROM, 64 MB RAM) to just under DM 4000 (700 MHz G3, CD-RW, 256 MB RAM). To the disappointment of many Apple fans, a brand-new iMac with TFT display is still a long time coming - various PC suppliers have left Apple far behind in terms of innovation in the home office.
The Power Macintosh G4 is now available with clock speeds up to 867 MHz. The three models (733 MHz to 867 MHz) have CD-RW or even DVD-R drives. The prices range from just under DM 4500 to just under DM 9300. All G4 computers have a revised, slimmer design in the noble "Quicksilver" colour in common. After the Powerbook and iBook, Apple's professional machine now also shimmers in noble silver.
And with MagiCMac, the noble computer also receives a noble operating system from the convinced Atari user... (tr)
