MagiC + MagiC Mac become Open Source (12.03.2018 - 20:50 Uhr)![]() AtariX was only the prelude, programmer Andreas Kromke apparently wants to work through his entire Atari past via GitHub. Currently, the source codes for several MagiC companion programs such as MGSearch and the desktop MagXDesk are already online. In the readme, however, Kromke announces that all source codes will be made open. This means in detail: KAOS (TOS patch), Mag!X/MagiC Atari, MagiCMac (OS 9/68k Macs) and MagiCMac X (OS X/PPC Macs). MagiC was the dominant operating system for the Atari in the 90s and was also performant on the small Ataris. The port to the Mac, supported by Apple, caused a stir in the Atari market: now Mac computers and clones were also suitable for cleanly written ST software. In response, ST-Computer included Apple computers and software in its coverage in 1995, but this divided readers. The distributor Application Systems Heidelberg still sells MagiC Mac X. KAOS is also historically interesting: the patch for TOS 1.04 contained several modifications and, with KaosDesk, a new desktop. Software developers were confronted for the first time with users who did not use the original TOS. Atari did not take legal steps against KAOS, in some accelerator cards a TOS adapted with KAOS was used. https://gitlab.com/AndreasK/Atari-Mac-MagiC-Sources/tree/master/ |
